The highlands of Iceland, known as “Hálendið” in Icelandic, are a stunningly beautiful, rugged terrain located in the interior of the country. This unspoiled wilderness area is known for its vast expanses of volcanic desert, interspersed with mountain peaks, glaciers, and vibrant geothermal areas. Two of the most notable sites in the Icelandic highlands are Landmannalaugar and Eldgjá.
Landmannalaugar, known for its colorful rhyolite mountains and hot springs, is a geothermal wonderland. The area boasts a surreal landscape with multi-colored peaks, lava fields, and a warm river perfect for bathing. It serves as a starting point for the popular Laugavegur trek, taking hikers through some of the country’s most breathtaking scenery.
Eldgjá, on the other hand, is the largest volcanic canyon in the world, stretching an impressive 40 km from its origin to where it disappears beneath the Mýrdalsjökull glacier. Its most distinctive feature is Ófærufoss, a majestic waterfall cascading down in two tiers. This geological wonder is a testament to Iceland’s dynamic and active volcanic activity.

You can not reach the higlands on a regular vehicle like a standard car from a carental. You will need to drive a 4×4 SUV or by highland bus.
