After pickup in Reykjavík the course is set for Landmannalaugar, a place that is well known for its colorful mountains, geothermal hot springs, and beautiful lava fields in the Fjallabak Nature Reserve. It is a protected wilderness area that is known for its rugged and dramatic landscapes, geothermal features, colorful rhyolite mountains, and pristine wilderness.
The trek begins at Landmannalaugar with hiking on the Laugavegur trail through the Laugahraun Lava
One of the exciting elements of the trip is turning from the beaten path towards the Landmannahellir mountain toward a hut where the group will spend the first night. We will travel through mountains and mountains lakes. The highest peak on this day’s trek is at 823m above sea level. The views from there are spectacular in good weather. In good conditions it is possible to see the three biggest glaciers in Iceland all at the same time: Vatnajökull Glacier, Langjökull Glacier and Hofsjökull glacier.
The day trek is 19 km long. The hike starts in Landmannalaugar at approximately 600m altitude and ends in similar altitude in Landmannahellir hut.
Day 2
Landmannahellir hut – Dalakofi hut
After breakfast and preparation of our lunch pack for the day we start trekking towards the Dalakofi hut. We will hike alongside the Waterfall Rauðifoss which is a beautiful waterfall with a spectacular red color caused by oxidization of iron. We will hike to the source of this waterfall, the amazing red eye that is an unforgettable sight.
There are many beautiful waterfalls the way along with colorful canyons and hills. We can see steam coming up from the ground in the valley Reykjadalir as there are geothermal activities and hot springs to be found in the area. On the day we will get to the highest altitude of 1000m above sea level and the view is magnificent given that the weather conditions are good. In good weather, we can see glaciers and the Mountain Hrafntinnusker, Lake Álftavatn and other beautiful sceneries. This path is not commonly travelled, which means that we will not meet many hikers on this trek. We will end this trek at the mountain hut, Dalakofinn.
The day hike of 17,5 km is estimated to take 8 hours.
Day 3
Dalakofi hut – Hungurfit hut
The trek goes from Dalakofi hut toward Hungurfit hut as we travel along the canyon Markarfljótsgljúfur a magnificent canyon that we see every now and then throughout this day and the next. We will travel alongside the river Hvítmagana and to the edge of the glacier area of the glacier Torfajökull. The group will be picked up at the hut Mosi by the end of the day and we get transfer to Reykjavík.
