Tour description

Laki Crater, day tour deep into the highlands of Iceland

Open departure day tour to the Laki crater system. We will travel deep into the highlands in this tour to visit and inspect the magnificent nature created by the Laki eruptions in 1783. Hiking to the top of the Laki is optional. Local guide / drivers lead the tour on vehicle suitable for the highlands.

Shortly after picking up in the village of Kirkjubæjarklaustur, we will abandon the main road and head up to the highlands. In this tour, we drive the mountain road F206 to the volcano crater system Laki. The F206 road is a challenging mountain track that leads to the area known as the Laki Crater, a series of volcanic craters and fissures that erupted between 1783 and 1784.

The route to Laki is only suitable for 4×4 vehicles, with a few river crossings on the route. We will experience unique and stunning landscapes with the Laki Crater and lava formations dating back to 1783 when Laki erupted.

The area is a should be attraction for nature enthusiasts, but it is difficult to access it and you don’t meet lot of other people in this area.

The eruption from Laki is also known as Skaftáreldar in Icelandic and marks the beginning of a period of hardship in Icelandic history. The tour guide will give a briefing about this period as we drive alongside the lava field, where we can see and experience traces of the Laki eruptions surrounding us.
In this expedition, we stop at Fjaðrárgljúfur canyon, a beautiful and narrow canyon with the Fjaðrá river flowing through the canyon, creating picturesque waterfalls and streams. It is possible to do an easy hike along the canyon; it takes 20 minutes, and those that do not wish to hike can enjoy the view on a sightseeing platform that gives a good view over the canyon and waterfall.
From Fjaðrárgljúfur, we follow the 4×4 route and as we enter the highlands plateau, we reach the waterfall Fagrifoss. Fagrifoss is on a lowkey path and certainly not visited enough while being among Iceland’s most beautiful waterfalls.

We continue our expedition to our next stop at Laki Crater. We will have a lunch break there. There are restroom facilities, and you may encounter park rangers while visiting Vatnajökull National Park.
The hike to the top of Laki takes approximately 2,5 hours back and forth. The view from there in good weather is incredible. Hiking is optional. Shorter distance hikes are also possible. We stop for 2,5 hours at Laki for lunch, and we make it optional for the travelers to hike the peak Laki crater.

Our expedition continues to the crater Tjarnargígur, one of the many fissures created in the 1783-1784 eruptions. Tjarnargígur is one of the most impressive craters of the Laki system. The travelers have option to do a hike there from the Crater deep into the lava. It is one hour hike.
This tour is approximately 8 hours tour.

Pickup and drop of is at the N1 Gas station in the village of Kirkjubæjarklaustur.

On the tour, there is access to restrooms at most sightseeing stops. Travelers need to bring soft drinks and snacks for the day.
