Tour description

Shortly after pickup in the village Kirkjubæjarklaustur we will abandon the main road and head up to the highlands. In this tour we drive the mountain road F206 to the volcano crater system Laki. The F206 road is a challenging mountain track that leads to the area known as Laki crater, a series of volcanic craters and fissures that erupted between 1783-1784
The route to Laki is only suitable for 4×4 vehicles with few rivers crossings on the route. We will experience unique and stunning landscapes with the Laki Crater and lava formations dating back to 1783 when Laki erupted. The area is a major attraction for nature enthusiasts.
The eruption from Laki is also known as Skaftáreldar in Icelandic and mark the beginning of a period of hardship in Icelandic history. The tour guide will give a briefing about this period as we drive alongside the lava field where we can see and experience traces of the Laki eruptions surrounding us.
Our first stop on this expedition is Fjaðrárgljúfur, a beautiful and narrow canyon with the Fjaðrá river flowing through the canyon, creating picturesque waterfalls and streams. It is possible to do an easy hike along the canyon, it takes s 30 minutes and those that do not wish to hike can enjoy the view on a sightseeing platform that gives a good view over the canyon and waterfall.
From Fjaðrárgljúfur, we follow the 4×4 route and as we enter the highlands plateau, we reach the waterfall Fagrifoss. Fagrifoss is on a lowkey path and certainly not visited enough while being among Iceland’s most beautiful waterfalls.
We continued our expedition to our next stop at Laki crater. We will have a lunch break there. There is a facility to sit and use the restroom and in some cases we might meet up with park rangers as we will find ourselves in the National park of Vatnajökull.
The hike to the top of Laki takes approximately 2,5 hours back and forth. The view from there in good weather is incredible. Hiking is optional. Shorter distance hikes are also possible.
Our expedition continues to the crater Tjarnargígur, one of the many fissures created in the 1783-1784 eruptions. Tjarnargígur is one of the most impressive craters of the Laki system. We set the course to the low land and back to the village Kirkjubæjarklaustur
The tours are private tours and activities in the tour can be tailor made for the group.
Laki Crater and its surrounding is a major attraction for nature enthusiasts.
